Furiosa, Bullet Train headline our list of action movies on HBO Max to watch (July 2025)
Although it might have a branding problem, it's hard to deny HBO Max's library when you get into the app. The streaming service has a deep vault of classic films that are catnip for me, but just as crucially, they have plenty of recent blockbusters that are worth your time. If you're looking for action this July we've pulled together three movies that fit the bill perfectly, regardless of what you're looking for: Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Aquaman (2018) Just as Superman has reminded us all that superhero movies are supposed to be silly, Aquaman did the same thing all the way back in 2018. This film, which stars Jason Momoa as the king of the sea, follows Arthur Curry as he comes into conflict with his half-brother and ultimately accepts his mantle as the king of Atlantis. Along the way, we get time with Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, and a variety of delightful undersea critters. Aquaman is not ultimately a very serious movie, but it matches the energy of Momoa perfectly, and as a result, it's a hugely entertaining one. You can watch Aquaman on HBO Max. Bullet Train (2022) You might have thought that Brad Pitt was past the point in his career where he could lead an all-out action comedy, but you would be mistaken. Bullet Train sees Pitt playing an assassin who wants to change. He hops on a bullet train and finds himself face-to-face with people who are after the same thing he's looking for. Featuring some expertly choreographed fight scenes, a zippy pace, and a satisfying conclusion, Bullet Train is exactly the kind of lighthearted action movie that we simply don't get enough of anymore, and it features a great ensemble cast. You can watch Bullet Train on HBO Max. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) When you're following up on one of the greatest action movies ever made, you're almost destined for failure. In spite of those lofty expectations, Furiosa turned out to be a hugely successful movie in its own right. This prequel tells the story of Furiosa before the events of Fury Road in five heartbreaking chapters. The film is less all-out action-forward than Fury Road, but it still has several of the best car chase sequences of the decade. Even better is Anya Taylor-Joy's central performance, which feels destined to stand the test of time. You can watch Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on HBO Max.

The critics were wrong. This underrated Ayo Edebiri thriller is now on HBO Max (July 18-20)
Critics don't always get it right. David Fincher's Fight Club, one of the defining movies of the last 30 years, received boos at the Venice Film Festival. Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho divided the audience upon its release due to its controversial subject matter. While Opus does not reach the highs of those aforementioned movies, it did not deserve to flop at the theaters. The Ayo Edebiri-led thriller should find a new audience on HBO Max. While you're there, check out these three underrated movies. Opus (2025) God bless John Malkovich. The 71-year-old fully embraced being an egotistical and self-indulgent pop star in Opus. That's a credit to writer-director Mark Anthony Green, who cast Malkovich in this transformational role. Wanting to stand out in a crowded media field, journalist Ariel Ecton (Edebiri) receives her big break when she's invited to the compound of Alfred Moretti (Malkovich), a '90s superstar coming out of retirement with a new album. Ariel is startled to learn that Moretti's compound is essentially a cult — a place where the singer's followers can worship him and his music. No one ever said cults were a good thing, and Ariel eventually discovers Moretti's nefarious plans for the future. Malkovich has the time of his life as the eccentric musician. Embrace the weirdness, and you'll be rewarded with a twisty thriller. Stream Opus on HBO Max. Pearl (2022) Mia Goth broke out as a scream queen in X, but Pearl transformed her into a star. Pearl Douglas (Goth), one of the villains in X, receives her origin story in Ti West's prequel. Growing up on a farm, Pearl dreams of becoming a chorus girl or a movie star. However, Pearl can't abandon her paralyzed father and strict mother. Pearl's rage for her parents fuels her sociopathic tendencies, which include killing animals. When a projectionist (Superman's David Corenswet) gives her attention, Pearl sees him as her ticket to stardom. Yet Pearl can't escape her true nature, as her propensity for violence transfers from animals to humans. Stream Pearl on HBO Max. Batman Returns (1992) Superman this. Superman that. How about some love for the Caped Crusader? Admittedly, it's an exciting time for Superman, as James Gunn's feature film about Clark Kent appears to be a successful start to a new shared universe. But let's not forget that Batman has the best solo movies for DC characters. While Batman and The Dark Knight receive most of the adulation from fans, don't sleep on Michael Keaton's second outing as Bruce Wayne, Batman Returns. In this sequel, Batman faces three new foes: Oswald Cobblepot (Danny DeVito), aka the Penguin; Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), a corrupt businessman; and Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer), aka Catwoman. Keaton remains as stoic as ever, but it's Pfeiffer who steals the show. Stream Batman Returns on HBO Max.

HBO Max Cancels Series After One Season
Sadly, HBO Max has made the decision to cancel one of their series after releasing only one season on their platform. The series finale was released not even a full week before the announcement was released. The network obviously didn't want to keep fans hanging for more. This news may be disappointing for viewers who tuned into the series since it first started airing in May. Now, after a mere two months following its initial release on HBO Max, the series has come to a complete end without any possibility of a continuation. For such a quick cancellation, it can be disappointing to remember how long it took the show to get off the ground in the first place. The show's development can be traced back to 2020 before it was finally ordered in 2023. The series was part of a deal between J.J. Abram's Bad Robot label and Warner Bros. going back to 2019, and in 2025, the series remains the only series to have come to fruition out of their contract. As shared via Variety: 'The 1970s crime series ' Duster ' has been canceled at HBO Max after just one season.' The outlet included the following statement from HBO Max regarding the cancellation: 'While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a second season of ' Duster ,' we are so grateful to have had the chance to work with the amazingly talented co-creators J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, and our partners at Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television,' the streamer shared. 'We are tremendously proud of this series led by Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson and we thank them along with our cast and crew for their incredible collaboration and partnership.' WBTV thanked J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan in addition to the cast and crew of the series for their work on Duster: 'J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan delivered a thrilling, multi-dimensional crime drama in ' Duster ,' with textured characters that took the audience back to the 1970s in a new and innovative way,' WBTV added. 'Those characters were brought to life by a wonderful team led by Josh, Rachel, and an extremely talented ensemble cast, along with an expert crew behind the scenes. We are incredibly proud of the show, and while we wish this journey could continue, we are thankful to our partners at HBO Max for the opportunity to tell Jim and Nina's story.' It's an unfortunate result of the competitive nature of streaming and how platforms curate content. While Duster won't be returning for another season, at least it was able to finally make it to the screen at all.
